Rhodes

Based on a book by Sarah Millin, this is the story of Cecil Rhodes, the man for whom an entire country was named in Africa. Good location photography and the excellent portrayal by Walter Huston of this empire builder make the film somewhat more palatable, but basically it is about a ruthless opportunist who alternately assists and exploits entire peoples. A story of the forced assimilation of a people's lifestyle and culture for material gain, this is part of the story of South Africa's turbulent history and a man who was not only instrumental in the Boer War but also established the Rhodes Scholarships with $10 million--a man of contrasts.
