The Ring [WS]

"Considering that The Ring was one of the surprise hits of 2002, it seems odd that so little was done for this release. Of course, that means only one thing: get ready for the special edition. Supplements are very weak, consisting solely of a promo piece for 8 Mile, the trailers for Catch Me If You Can and Ringu (the original Japanese version of this film), and a hyped, but very disappointing, 15-minute short film made up of unused footage that is supposed to add to the film, but ultimately adds nothing. On the plus side, the 1.85:1 anamorphic image is flawless. Colors, though often muted and dark, come across perfectly, as does detail. Darks are equally strong, with no signs of breaking down. Dreamworks receives high marks for this outstanding transfer that accurately reproduces the theatrical experience. A separate full-frame version is also available with more information on the top and bottom of the screen. Sound is presented in both 5.1 Dolby Digital and DTS tracks, and for the most part, they are very good and effective for this type of film. Surrounds, though they could be a little more aggressive, are still present at just the right time. Dialogue is clear up front, and the ever-present sound effects are very strong. So much should have been done for this release. There seems to be little question that more will follow."
