"Today, producer David L. Wolper's name is most commonly tied to prestigious fiction projects such as The Thorn Birds and Roots. Earlier in his career, however, Wolper made history by creating a series of televised documentaries that introduced millions of Americans to NASA's ongoing ""Space Race"" in the Cold War era. The most prominent of those programs, his Oscar-nominated Race for Space, originally aired on April 24, 1960, and appears in this box set; Mike Wallace of 60 Minutes narrates the story of the competition between the American and Soviet space programs. This box set also contains the film Project: Man in Space, which originally aired on December 4, 1963; it tells the stories behind the earliest space probes, discusses the launch of cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, and the development of Project Mercury. The collection ends with Race for the Moon, initially broadcast on July 27, 1964, on the competition between the U.S. and U.S.S.R. to be the first country to land on the moon."
