That The Times of Harvey Milk makes no effort to be objective is its greatest strength. Narrated by Harvey Fierstein, this poignant documentary details the life and career of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay city supervisor to be elected in San Francisco. It is also the story of Harvey's boss, farsighted mayor George Moscone. And ultimately, it is the story of Dan White, the deeply disturbed, homophobic supervisor who ended up killing both Milk and Moscone. While the tragic outcome of the story--and White's outrageously light punishment--is common knowledge, the film is suspensefully constructed in the manner of a good detective story. The decision to bestow an Academy Award on The Times of Harvey Milk was both controversial and eminently correct.
