Steven Soderburgh's grimly realistic portrayal of Depression-era life stars newcomer Jesse Bradford as Aaron, a bright, imaginative 12-year-old who lives with his family in a seedy St. Louis hotel. His father (Jeroen Krabbe) is a destitute salesman longing for a job with the WPA, and his mother (Lisa Eichhorn) is confined to a sanitarium due to tuberculosis. When Aaron's younger brother Sullivan (Cameron Boyd) is sent away to live with family and his father goes on the road on business, the youngster is left to fend for himself.
