The Young Girls of Rochefort [Criterion Collection]

Noted French filmmaker, Jaques Demy, art director Bernard Evein, who redecorated the entire town of Rochefort to fit Demy's vision, and the music of Michel Legrand pay tribute to Hollywood musicals in this delightfully frothy follow-up to his highly acclaimed Umbrellas of Cherbourg. It stars real-life sisters Catherine Deneuve and Francoise Dorleac as two artistic twins looking for romance. Together the sisters run a music shop and ballet school in beautiful Rochefort-by-the-sea. The fun begins when the two women come to the aid of two carnival hucksters and set off towards Paris where Dorleac finds true love in the arms of a handsome sailor who has painted a portrait of his dream girl---her. Meanwhile, Denture finds her happiness with a dashing American concert pianist (played by Gene Kelly) who has come looking for the composer of a terrific new piece of music and finds it to be her.
