Lifting its title from a Harlem drag ball, Jennie Livingston's film is a compilation of interviews with subjects from New York's cross-dressing society. Shot between 1985 and 1989, it examines the city's sub-culture of transvestites--primarily lower-class African-Americans and Hispanics--as they "vogue" through a series of lavish, over-the-top balls as well as dancing and dressing competitions.
