In eighteenth-century Bretagne, a young woman named H?lo?se (Ad?le Haenel) must sit for a portrait that will be used to entice potential suitors. She repeatedly refuses to sit for any artist until the commission is offered to a Marianne (No?mie Merlant), a young painter. In an effort to secure H?lo?se's trust, Marianne poses as H?lo?se's lady's maid. However, Marianne soon discovers that she is developing feelings for her subject.
