Touki Bouki [Criterion Collection]

A pair of alienated African lovers scheme to escape their bleak existence for a brighter future in the "City of Lights" in filmmaker Djibril Diop Mambety's allegorical study of fear and freedom. Realizing that they have failed to connect to society in a meaningful and fulfilling manner, Mory and his devoted girlfriend Anna hustle for the funds that will allow them to leave their hometown of Dakar and catch a boat to Paris. Though their initial efforts to scam the necessary escape funds are thwarted, a subsequent stroke of good luck finds their simple but trying plan finally coming into focus.
