Filmed in 1958 by the lateKonrad Wolf, this well-rounded drama focuses on the subject of uranium mining during the worst period of the Cold War. Banned because of its subject matter (hinting at hydrogen bomb development by the Russians), the drama is not a one-theme story. Wolf paints a desolate picture of the future by introducing characters who have not done so well and may never do well, period. An ex-soldier and amputee is bitter over his physical disability caused by the war, a barmaid caters unendingly to the foibles of macho men, and a young woman tries to defend herself against the unwanted advances of her male co-workers. Wherever Wolf focuses the camera and the story, the implications are that the obstacles encountered in the mines, in the attempt at Russo-German cooperation, and in the society at large may be just too great and numerous to overcome.
