"Often referred to as ""The French Hitchcock,"" Claude Chabrol gravitated frequently to thrillers, but often used this genre as a mere springboard into other areas, such as social criticism, satire, or broad comedy. The two features in this set - 2004's La Demoiselle d'Honneur/The Bridesmaid, and 2000's Merci Pour le Chocolat/Nightca[ - epitomize this tendency. The Bridesmaid constitutes an adaptation of a Ruth Rendell novel, as it weaves the tale of a dangerous love affair between an impressionable young man (Benoit Magimel) and a disturbed bridesmaid (Laura Smet); the film co-stars Aurore Cl?ment, Bernard Le Coq and Solene Bouton. Merci Pour le Chocolat presents the labyrinthine chronicle of a young girl named Jeanne (Anna Mouglalis), who comes to believe that she may have been switched at birth, and that Mika (Huppert) - the woman newly married to the man whom Anna believes is her biological father - may be trying to poison her. Merci co-stars Jacques Dutronc and Rodolphe Pauly."
