"This box set presents a quartet of classic German features characterized by an unsparing anti-Nazi stance. First on the bill is Joachim Kunert's East German-produced The Adventures of Werner Holt (1962), about a young man who deserts following the Red Army invasion of Berlin in the spring of 1945. Next up is Wolfgang Staudte's DEFA-produced Rotation (1949), a thoughtful drama about a family divided between racist Nazism and pacifist egalitarianism. Kurt Maetzig's Council of the Gods, a WWII-set drama about private corporations dubiously profiting from the Nazi regime. Finally, Falk Harnack's The Axe of Wandsbek (1951) tells of a butcher stricken by grief after the Nazis force him to execute four Communists with a meat axe in 1938."
