In Search of History: The Mormon Rebellion

The filmmakers of A&E's In Search of History recount the bloodiest battle between church and state ever waged on American soil in this documentary detailing the historic confrontation between Mormon settlers in Utah and the United States Army. The year was 1857. Beleaguered Mormon settlers had traveled halfway across the country on foot in an attempt to escape persecution and prejudice. Little did the weary religious travelers realize that their greatest battle lie not in the past, but the very near future. It was dubbed the "Utah War," and before the fighting ceased, 120 men, women, and children would be killed in a violent exchange that very nearly erupted into an even larger conflict. In this film, Mormon historians explore the dark legacy of the so-called Mountain Meadows Massacre through archival documents, and vivid re-creations.
