George Armstrong Custer graduated last in his class at West Point and went on to become a Brigadier General at the age of 23, serving with distinction in the Union army during the Civil War. These are but some of the facts presented in this biography of one of America's best-known soldiers. Blond and handsome, Custer longed for fame; he did achieve that. But unlike some other military leaders, he is not known for his success, but for his inglorious defeat at the Little Big Horn, where he obstinately led 264 men to their deaths. Rare photographs, journals, Custer's own diaries, and commentary by historians tell the story of this commander and the day at the Little Big Horn.
