The Love

Love (Szerelem) is the story of an elderly Hungarian woman (Lili Darvas) and her selfless daughter-in-law Luca (Mari T?r?csik). As Darvas' character becomes increasingly incapable of caring for herself, Luca gives up her own life to provide round-the-clock care for the old woman. Darvas' son Janos (Ivan Darvas) is absent from the proceedings: he is a political activist, serving ten years in prison. To buoy Darvas' spirits, Luca composes letters ostensibly written by the son. In these faux missives, Darvas is assured that her son is living the life of Riley as an American moviemaker. Cunningly directed by K?roly Makk, Love never lets on whether or not Darvas is wise to Luca's affectionate subterfuge. The first of Makk's films to gain a U.S. release, Love was the winner of a Cannes Film Festival Special Jury Prize.
