In this black comedy, a disturbed widow, Mrs. Claire Marrable (Geraldine Page), has devised a unique way of making money--she hires a succession of older maids, murders them, and steals their money. However, Mrs. Alice Dimmock (Ruth Gordon), in an attempt to find out what has happened to her missing friend, poses as a maid-for-hire to uncover the mystery lurking in the Marrable estate.
