Landmark neo-realist film in which writer/director Luchino Visconti adapted Giovanni Verga's novel "I Malavoglia" to the lives contemporary fishermen in Sicily. Working with a non-professional cast of locals, he depicts the lives of the poor fishing village of Aci Trezza and their hopeless fight against exploitation by the Italians who control the fishing market.
