Balm in Gilead is a collection of four stories dealing with relationships (romantic, familial and societal). "High School" concerns a summer friendship between two young persons of differing social classes. In "Delicate Eyes" we meet protagonist Leah Laban, a young woman who has lived her entire life in her younger sister's shadow. Elizabeth Hutchins' husband goes off to war in "Balm in Gilead", leaving her to fend for herself in the inhospitable wilderness of the Nebraska territory. And in the novelette entitled "Little Sister" younger sibling Deborah Porter comes to college and finds herself the center of attention (and the objection of attraction) for the first time in her young life.
