Looking For a Thrill: An Anthology of Inspiration

"The respected independent record label Thrill Jockey Records decided to celebrate its tenth year in business by making a documentary in which over a hundred noted independent artists talked about their key musical influences, and Looking for a Thrill: An Anthology of Inspiration was the result. Most of the material on this DVD (which contains more than five hours of interviews) has been transferred to disc in the full-frame aspect ratio of 1.33:1, though some multi-screen segments have necessitated letterboxing. The audio has been mastered in Dolby Digital Stereo; the interviews are primarily in English, though a small number of foreign-language interviews feature burned-in subtitles, while no multiple language options have been included. Given the nature of the project, no true ""bonus"" materials appear on this release, but the menus offer the options of choosing specific interviews, reviewing the participants by categories, or simply playing the entire disc from front to back. Most viewers will find some participants a great deal more interesting than others, while the frequently off-putting use of audio and visual effects by director Braden King and editor Ian Williams doesn't always present the material in an easily accessible manner, so the interactive menu options certainly make this disc easier to wade through for viewers, and this is an excellent example of a project which would not have been practical (at least in its current form) on any other format than DVD."
