I can do research by talking to people about what is important to them? This was my joyful question when I was a graduate student at Syracuse University and first heard of research methods associated with the Chicago School of Sociology. Until then, I had thought research was about putting people in situations and seeing how they react or by asking questions that researchers think are important. Even rats, monkeys, and pigeons in boxes and cages were what research was to me.
Getting to know people? Building trust? Wanting to know what was important to them?

That was the kind of research I wanted to do, and I have--for more than 30 years. The essays in this collection bring together information that until now has been scattered in bits and pieces. This is the first comprehensive look at two significant approaches to qualitative, human sciences research.
