"In the mid-late 1960s, when such figures as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Claes Oldenburg arrived on the contemporary art scene, their extreme modes of visual expression cut so violently against the grain of the establishment that few spectators knew what to make of them, and critics responded with predictable dismissal. Creations such as Lichtenstein's oversized comic strips, Warhol's Marilyn Monroe heads, and Oldenburg's transformation of consumer items into art all served as hallmarks of this period. This compilation presents three episodes of London Weekend Television's documentary series The South Bank Show, each devoted to profiling one of the said artists, and each one hosted by Melvyn Bragg.
