British director Steve Loveridge's music biopic charts the unusual career trajectory of genre-blending English rapper Mathangi "Maya" Arulpragasam, a.k.a. M. I. A.. With the aid of home videos and interviews with her closest friends, it examines her multi-faceted identity as a Sri Lankan Tamil child refugee, a British immigrant, a crossover pop artist, a serial provocateur, and a controversial figure in the contemporary music scene.
