One of the strangest and most poorly-understood zoological events happens every ten years or so. Though the Australian outback is a notoriously arid place, devoid of any major water source, approximately once per decade rains flood the scorched Aussie river beds and create a magnificent desert oasis called Lake Eyre, that draws around 100,000 pelicans - about 1/3 of all the pelicans in Australia. These birds temporarily migrate from their homes and join one another in the outback, to feast on fish, billions of shrimp, and other sea creatures. They also begin courting and breeding, raising an overwhelming number of chicks in this environment. This documentary program from PBS's Nature series pulls viewers into this phenomenon for an up close exploration. Chris Morgan narrates.
