Rise of the Black Pharaohs

Archaeologists Geoff Emberling and Tim Kendell dig into the past to tell the story of Kush, an ancient Nubian state in what is now Sudan. An Egyptian subject state until about 800 B.C., it rose up and conquered Egypt, ruling it for almost 100 years. The result: Nubian pharaohs, who were ignored by early, racist archaeologists. Here, Emberling searches for the remains of a Kushite king in a pyramid; and Kendell unearths clues about the Kushite belief system at a mountain called Jebel Barkal.
