In this film, Marfa is a feisty Russian peasant girl. To escape the advances of cruel Cossack chieftain Griegoff, Marfa boards a ship to the United States. Upon arrival, the heroine's mercenary relatives arrange for her to be sold for whatever purpose her new "owner" deems fit.
