Huckleberry Finn (Rooney) lives with the Widow Douglas (Risdon), who's fond of him; he likes her, too, but would rather fish and loaf than be the good schoolboy she wants. When he overhears his ne'e'r-do-well Pap (Kilian) demand $800 for Huck, the boy flees, but his father imprisons him in a shack. While Pap is gone, Huck fakes his own murder, and flees, later encountering Jim (Ingram), a slave of Widow Douglas', who's trying to get to a free state to join his wife. Meanwhile, townspeople conclude Jim murdered Huck, and post a warrant for his arrest. Jim and Huck meet two con men who claim to be a Duke (Frawley) and the true King of France (Connolly); all four continue along the river on Huck's raft. They're run out of one town for a bogus theatrical presentation, which leads to Huck learning Jim is wanted for his murder. With the help of riverboat Captain Brandy (Watson), Huck prevents the Duke and King from fleecing two recently orphaned sisters. The arrival of a posse looking for Jim makes Huck and Jim hide in the woods, but when Huck is bitten by a rattlesnake, Jim rushes him back to town, and is arrested. When Huck awakens, he learns of this and convinces Captain Brandy to rush him back home; he arrives just in time to prevent Jim's lynching. Widow Douglas sets Jim free, and Huck decides to try being a good boy once more.
