John Resko (Ben Gazzara) is convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment for the killing of a store owner. While in prison, he discovers he has an uncanny ability as an artist. His efforts are helped by the Principal Keeper (Stuart Whitman), who replaced a sadistic prison guard. Based on the true story and autobiography of John Resko, the film covers his nearly 20 years in jail before his life sentence is commuted. Resko served as technical advisor of this project which features an all-star cast. Vincent Price, Ray Walston, Sammy Davis Jr., Rod Steiger and Broderick Crawford join Gazzara in this methodical film.
