Castle on the Hudson

John Garfield gives one of his most powerful performances in this gripping remake of 20,000 Years in Sing Sing. He plays wiseacre cat burglar Tommy Gordon who is serving up to 30 years in the state pen for stealing jewels. Meanwhile, Tommy's devoted gal Kay Manners is busily attempting to get him paroled. Creepy Ed Crowley, a classic shyster is willing to help her in exchange for her affection. She pushes him away, a scuffle ensues and she is hurt. Warden Long understands Tommy's need to see her and grants him a pass to see her. Tommy promises to stay out of trouble, but unfortunately, Crowley arrives at Kay's bedside first and is in the midst of threatening her when Tommy arrives. A big fight erupts and Kay shoots the lawyer. Tommy takes the rap to protect her and becomes a fugitive until he learns that the good-hearted warden's job is jeopardized.
