Future American President John F. Kennedy (Cliff Robertson) is a young U-boat Lieutenant in the South Seas during World War II. When his ship is destroyed by the Japanese, he saves a crew member by swimming with his wounded cohort to the safety of a small island. Norman Fell, Robert Blake, and Robert Culp provide comic relief in this saga that portrays the young Lieutenant as a courageous hero. JFK was asked his personal preference as to who he would like to see portray the young President. Kennedy chose Robertson with no hesitation, and the actor's career was benefited by public recognition for his role in the film.
