Ambitious but impecunious medical student Robert Mitchum marries the older Olivia De Havilland, so that she can pay his tuition fees. De Havilland loves Mitchum, but he loves nothing but his work. Mitchum survives his training and goes to work as the assistant to a tough-but-tender small-town medico.
