When Elizabeth Davis, slave to the Davis Family, expresses her feelings to the man she loves, she knows the consequences will be dire. The year is 1862 and Elizabeth Davis is in love but the man she loves is a former confederate soldier, and her master's son.
William is injured, losing the use of his legs, and sent home to heal and Elizabeth is is waiting to care for him. A man she secretly loved since childhood.
Between the raging Civil War, the horrible attacks on the plantation, and Elizabeth's confession of her true feelings, the two fall in love. It doesn't take long for the household to see the blooming relationship and Elizabeth is faced with being raped by the plantation's overseer, daily beatings and nasty remarks from the household.
When the former cold and indifferent Caption renounces his beliefs in slavery, he pleads for his father to release Elizabeth, even offering to buy her, but his father threatens to sell her off and William knows he must take Elizabeth and run with her.
The two flee to Canada but the trip is not without its fair share of problems. William's father has sent slave catchers out to hunt them down and kill them before having a change of heart but it's too late as the slave catchers are now out for blood. Later Elizabeth is forced to kill or be killed by the slave catchers that have caught them. Often walking for miles in the cold and without food for days, Elizabeth has doubts and considers turning back. After witnessing the death of two young slaves she befriended, Elizabeth realizes they can never return. They must continue their journey to Canada and to freedom.
