The Bonfire of the Vanities

Based on the novel by Tom Wolfe, this drama involves a successful Wall St. bond trader, Sherman McCoy, whose marriage and professional career begins to fall apart. Most of the plot revolves around an incident when Sherman and his mistress, Maria, take a wrong turn in the South Bronx. Maria, attempting to speed away from would-be muggers, accidentally hits and kills one of them. The fact that he was an impoverished African-American,--and that Maria refuses to report the incident to the police--cause the investigation to become a media circus. Soon Sherman must prove his innocence while his personal life is virtually destroyed. Tom Hanks and Melanie Griffith star with performances by Bruce Willis, Kim Cattrall, Morgan Freeman, etc.
