Banished from her people because of her uncontrolled powers, Numi was almost forgotten when revolution swept through the land--destroying the entire oppressive Omino race. But the revolutionaries learn of Numi's existance. Although her fellow Omino had forgotten her, the revolution dare not--the horrible psychic Omino powers had held the world in slavery for countless generations and would do so again if allowed to spread.
Cor was one of the first of the revolutionaries, but he is tired now. One more death on his conscience and he'll be able to rest at last--at least until the revolution that created him turns on him and destroys him. The last thing he expects to discover is that Numi is a sympathetic enemy.
Author Kate Rothwell combines intricate world-building, a fascinating look at revolution and the way it so often betrays its principles, and a strange but moving love story as two people, each virtually the last of their race, find each other in a land torn by war and destruction.
Rothwell does an excellent job portraying the strange psychic powers held by the Omino--the ability to step into others' minds, to send the soul from the body to spy on anyone, and, in Numi's case, the ability to create constructs with full physical manifestation. These psychic powers form a key part of the complex battle between Cor and Numi as they plumb one another's souls and learn the secrets of their most bitter enemy.
