The rich can afford expensive playthings, including "genalts", genetically altered organisms, artificial people who are not people or even animals under the law, but simply property. Suki is made to the exact specifications of a rich executive who wants a rebellious girl to torment. One day she escapes her hellish captivity, only to be captured by brutal criminals who sell her on the black market. But there is more than meets the eye to Suki's escape. In the background is a figure of vast power and ruthlessness, who secretly intervened in Suki's creation so that she could serve his particular purpose.
