Opal's father hasn't been the same since her mother died. He wastes away his life and eventually her future gambling with a known gangster, Johnny "Legs" Lorran. When her father mysteriously disappears and she learns that the Wisecarver holdings are now the property of Legs, she is devastated. Set on holding on to what was promised her, she remains on the estate. Considered a spinster at thirty, and never having been married, she's overwhelmed by Johnny's amorous attentions when she confronts him.
