The Regent

In this sequel to ‘The Card’, Edward Henry Machin (Denry Machin for short) continues his adventures and opportunism - from unexpected stock market gains to becoming the proprietor of a well known and respected London Theatre - where he finds that he is 'practically also a theatrical manager with a play to produce, artistes to engage, and the public to attract'. Bennett succeeds as before in delighting the reader with his jocular humour and commentary upon human nature.
