Alton Locke, Tailor and Poet

This novel first published in 1850 tells the story of a young tailor-boy with instincts and aspirations beyond the expectations of his working-class background. Kingsley exposes the social injustice suffered by workers in the clothing trade and gives an insight into the Chartist movement with which he was involved during the 1840s. With a prefatory memoir by Thomas Hughes, the author of "Tom Brown's Schooldays".
