As heavyweight Spots Spotswood struggles to float his sinking career, cope with wartime privation and keep the draft board at bay, he must guide Chicken Johnson, his young ward, through the complex racial divide of America during WW2. Spots must do battle with Felix Staffieri, Philly's lethal white-haired man, speaking in the blue collar idiom of men and women who labor and love at ground level.
