Zale's life has been stalled since the terrible night when her father and another man died under mysterious circumstances, and the police labelled her father a murderer. After years of mourning and hiding with her mother, journalism summer camp in Arizona's mountains was supposed to be a step toward living again. It was supposed to be Zale's chance to rediscover a normal life. But now, on the first night of camp, she sees a strange man prowling around her cabin. She remembers him as the Man in the Black Suit, who she last saw just before her father's death.
Soon she meets Shehri, who takes a dislike to her, and Demir, a good looking young man. They discover a number of odd things they have in common, including the custom of hanging amulets--five symbols of protection--above their doors.
What has brought them all to this camp? Why is Zale the only one who can see the Man in the Black Suit? Why does Shehri have it in for Zale from the beginning?
They soon find that they have abilities they don't understand, but must use those powers and work together to face powerful beings who hate them for reasons of their own.
The demon once known as Mavet, the God of Death, wants to use Zale to find his way back to paradise, along with his army of demons. The Elohim--the angels--will go to any lengths to keep her from falling into the demon's hands. And Mavet's human servants, members of the Cult of Lilith, are on their trail as well.
With no one to trust, Zale and her friends have to rely on one another to survive. Zale must try to uncover the truth about her father's death, before Mavet destroys everyone who matters to her.
And before he uses her to start a war in Heaven.
