Jonathan Swift's "A Modest Proposal for Preventing the Children of Poor People from Being a Burthen to Their Parents, or the Country, and for Making Them Beneficial to the Publick" was published as an anonymous pamphlet in 1729. In this essay, Swift presents a satirical "proposal" to address poverty in Ireland by killing the children of the Irish poor and feeding the bodies of those children to the English landlords who owned much of the property in Ireland.

"A Modest Proposal" was written in the style of Juvenalian satire; Swift closely followed the style and form of satire developed by the Roman poet Juvenal. This essay is still widely read and taught as one of the finest works of satire in the English language.
