Orphaned by the age of 10 in France, brought up by starchy strangers in Kent (where he acquired a stammer), the diminutive Maugham craved acceptance. He acquired it through his pen. Liza of Lambeth, his first novel, was sparked by his experience as a medical student at St Thomas’s hospital, but he rose to fame through his work for the stage. In 1907, after 17 rejections, Maugham’s play Lady Frederick was accepted by a London theatre. By the following year he had a record four plays running concurrently in the West End. His success was swift, remunerative, international.
