Contact Improvisation is a unique freestyle dance form that explores the body’s connection to the world through touch. This guide is designed to introduce the concepts and techniques of Contact Improvisation (CI) dance to students and practitioners at all levels. Contact Improv emerged as a 38 year old synthesis of gymnastics, Aikido and dance. It is considered to be a post-modern dance form in that its movements are functionally rather than aesthetically inspired. The basic form of this art-sport is a duet that is spontaneous, authentic self-expression. It is an ever-changing exploration of the laws of physics as applied to the body (or bodies). Picture a cross between modern dance, a game of Twister, surfing and Pair’s figure skating. That’s no help at all, but it’s a funny way to describe it to your curious friends. This book contains hundred of clear photos, exercises, and descriptions of the priciples. It is the only instructional manual for learnign CI currently on the market.
