"Cheryl went into the kitchen for a sugar cookie. As she turned away from the cow-shaped jar she saw a man wandering around in her backyard. She froze for a moment, holding the cookie to her lips without biting it. The man took a rotten tomato off the vine and tossed it onto the dirt. Well, Cheryl thought, my father would have done that anyway."
Cheryl comes home from school and finds a man wandering around in her family's garden. She locks herself in her sister's room and tries to reason with the danger of a stranger in her backyard. She doesn't want to add to her family's growing list of problems, but part of her knows she needs help.
