The book that started the I Drew it series
Diane’s Dragon is the book that started the I drew it books. I had written the story for my daughter Diane who, at the time, was all of three years old. Like any good father I started reading her the story. Wonder of wonders, she identified with the main character, and ask for it to be read over and over again. I had taken the time to type it on a manual typewriter and stapled it together with a cover. There was one last thing to do before calling it done. I had to get it illustrated. I was working two jobs at the time and much to my dismay one Saturday, While I sat collapsed in my chair Diane took out her book and crayons and began to draw in it.
I was livid and all set to punish Diane, fortunately my wife stopped me in time and instead I ask Diane what the pictures were. Much to my amazement she took me through the story, page by page, drawing by drawing. She got not a single one wrong.
I must admit, I could not understand the drawings without my daughter’s explanation of them. What do you expect of a three year old? Having received the idea I refined it and wrote other titles in the series.
All of these stories are set in the world of Dragonsward, a place of magic, where a god just might chase a bully away, or tell you how good or bad you had been. A place where the horse in the field might be a unicorn, or a sixteen year old girl find a crown and become High Queen
