As a physician, Herbert J. Hall incorporated the Arts and Crafts movement ideology with medicine. He studied neurasthenia and the rest cure. He envisioned a better way and opened a sanatorium that incorporated work cure theories and employed craftsmen as guides. With success, Hall expanded, trained apprentices, and made occupational therapy equipment and kits for hospitals and asylums.

In The Untroubled Mind Hall addresses: The Untroubled Mind, Religio Medici, Thought and Work, Idleness,
The Nervous Temperament, Self-Control, Regrets and Forebodings, The Cure by Faith and more.

His works include: The Work of Our Hands: A Study of Occupations for Invalids (1915), The Untroubled Mind (1915), Handicrafts for the Handicapped (1916) and The Sea World Waits: A Book of Poems (1922).
