In 2004, a team of Latvian archaeologists in Paris, while excavating a Left Bank édicule believed to have been frequented by Sartre and de Beauvoir, un-‘earthed’ the manuscript of Niles d’Argote, a previously unknown playwright. That play, titled HURE LARD, corresponded in many details with a play that everyone has assumed Peter Brook was making up when—promoting the play as the full realization of his directing theory—he characterized the play as “the emptiest play Western theatre has ever seen.”
