Named (allegedly) for the St. Christopher dashboard ornament, Long Island bookstore owner Christopher Raines has led an ostensibly uneventful but fun life. All this changes when he meets Martha Becker, an immensely overweight yet hypnotically beautiful artist, to whom he is inexplicably attracted. They embark on an intense romance which sets Chris' life on a journey of the heart and mind.
All too soon, the affair comes to an end. As if the heartbreak wasn't enough for Christopher, yet another tragedy follows shortly thereafter. From this tragedy, Chris is inspired to revisit two demons from his past; a girl he'd helped taunt in elementary school and the father who'd abandoned him as an infant.
While often being accused of being over analytical, Chris has a colorful supporting cast of friends and co-workers. Roger Tweedy, his wisecracking best friend and business partner with a heart of gold. Tucker Holtz, the high-strung socially awkward geek who'd do anything for anyone. Caitlyn McQuade, the impish mother figure to the men who is ironically six years their junior. Theresa Lambert, a would-be psychotherapist who just happens to be a school teacher. And of course, Kerry Daltrey, Christopher's sister/cousin/ other best friend.
Through this chaotic group of people and events the reader will enjoy a blend of humor, tragedy, eroticism, triumph and after hours beers.
