Goethe's FAUST is a classic tragic play, telling the story of a wager between God and Mephistopholes (Satan), who wishes to tempt the central character, Faust, away from righteousness. The Devil offers the ultimate "Faustian bargain": Mephistopholes will do Faust's bidding on Earth, and Faust will serve the Devil in Hell.
