An excerpt from the beginning of of the first chapter:

THE CARE OF OUR PERSONS

The Eye. The eye, when we want to use it, needs a good light both in daytime and at night; if we try to use our eyes in a poor light we strain them and if we keep on using them in a poor light we will harm them beyond remedy. The light for reading should come over our shoulder, that is, we should not directly face the light; if we must face it, then it should be shaded. The books we read should have good clear print on good paper and be easily read, that is without any effort. Cheap books are usually not fit to read, for two reasons : first, because of poor quality of paper and printing; and, second, because of poor quality of the reading matter itself.

It is a great mistake to allow children to read or study in a poor light; sooner or later they will have trouble, and a great wrong is done them. It is better, of course, that children should not read or study at night at all ; and certainly not in twilight. But they will do it if not prevented. We should watch out for headaches in children ; they are often caused by trouble with the sight and then they mean that we should seek the advice of a good doctor as to what to do. Putting drops in the eyes without a doctor's advice is a bad practice. When the eyes are tired we should give them a rest; and it is a good thing then, also, to bathe them in tepid water, keeping the lids shut.

The Ear. Earache is often caused by allowing the wind, especially a cold wind, to blow directly into the ear. Parents are often careless in this matter; and the children, and especially the babies, get the earache. The best thing to do for ordinary earache is to drop a little quite warm water in the ear, repeating if necessary; if this fails to relieve, it will generally be better to call a doctor. Some persons have an idea that it is a good thing for children to have a running at the ears. This is all wrong. A running from the ears should be stopped or the child may lose its hearing; or even worse things may happen. If a child has such a running, the doctor should be called; and if he says that it is of no consequence, call in another and better doctor, before the child loses its hearing.
