How many of us suffer the Blues? How many of us go from Blues to extremely happy for no reason? But, hey, that's called mood swings or bipolar. This book is about dealing with it and about how I found a way that helps me to go from the Blues to Blue Skies. It doesn't happen ovenight, but it does happen and without having really big mood swings.
My father had died diagnosed as catatonic schizophrenic. That's a very serious diagnosis, especially since it was my estranged father. It haunts me to this day. But I can deal with it and I'd like to help others with this form of mental disability.
Those diagnosed as being bipolar are too often characterized as being not just out of control but as being a serious hazard to those around them. That's just wrong. Bipolar disorder has a broad spectrum of degrees to it. Even though I've been diagnosed as having it and I've been hospitalized more than once because of it I think I've found the means to live a highly functional life. I've not only managed to qualify for admittance to a superior University (The University of California, Irvine) I earned two degrees from it. A BS degree in Biological Sciences and a PhD in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry. In addition, I've also managed to be productive as a research scientist in both plant and animals sciences. That is rather rare in the world of research science.
I now know that the life I've led has been an exceptional one. One that I feel proud to have done it and I think one that my family can be proud of. My bipolar disorder was initially a great hurdle for me to overcome. But then I was fortunate enough to figure out a way to change it from being a barrier to a spring board to get the things I wanted in my life. Faith in the future was a major factor. Learning about Eastern philosophy was another. I've found the Tao Te Ching by Lao Tse to be a huge resource for me. But then something so mundane as a Fifties DJ's signature sign off comment has also been a huge help to me. Honestly, I don't even remember his name but I can't forget his phrase: Remember to Think Blue Skies and Green lights! So simple, yet so tremendously helpful to me.
I've written about a broad range of subjects and situations in the book largely because I'm pretty old now. I like to think young, but then again every once in a while my body will remind me of just how much water has gone by underneath my bridge! Still, I've had one Hell of a good life and I've had many wonderful moments along with a passel of painful moments. Keeping them in balance and perspective is the key. That is what I've attempted to make this book about. Only you, my readers, will be able to supply the answer to whether I've accomplished that task or not. No matter what the answer is I do hope you find it to be a good read and worth your time.
